PEARS
Fruits other than apples and kiwifruit made up 11.1 percent of the value
of fruit and nut exports for the year ended June 2000. Included in this
figure are juicy, ripe New Zealand pears worth $16.0 million (30 June
2000).
Pears have increased in value by 187.5 percent from the year ended June
1990 to the year ended June 2000.

Bosc
A Bosc pear is an aromatic, flavourful pear. They are brown and do not
change colour as they ripen. Bosc is the best choice for cooking, because
it holds its shape nicely. A Bosc pear is always delicious eaten out of
hand.
Commice Pronunciation: kuh-MEES
One of the sweetest, juiciest varieties, and often are very large. Almost
no colour change when ripe. These juicy pears are considered to be the
best for eating out of hand.
Taylors Gold
Taylors Gold pears are rich and sweet. Lightly perfumed. They taste best
as it turns golden yellow. Ranks as the highest demanded ENZA Pear.
Cascade
Cascade pears are a rounder pear which are block red in colour and have
a smooth skin. They are juicy and sweet.
Nijiseki
Nijiseki pears are juicy and sweet with a butterscotch essence. Also known
as a 20th century pear. Yellow toned skin.
Hosui
One of the tastiest Asian pears. Sizing is large, very sweet and juicy.
Golden toned skin.
Selection Tips

good colour.
